Riester, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1987, is a core volunteer with The Grove and has a nearly 30-year history of HIV/AIDS advocacy in Denver. Among many things, he is a part-time Program Coordinator for the Positive Impact Program at Mile High Behavioral Healthcare. He was a long-standing member and board chair of the Denver HIV Resources Planning Council. He is a delegate of the International AIDS Conference and an NMAC HIV 50+ Strong and Healthy scholarship recipient. In 2018, Riester was included in the POZ 100 list, celebrating people aged 50+ with HIV, making a difference in the fight against the virus.
