Strategies for Disrupting Ageism and Advancing DEI

March 19 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MDT

American Society on Aging logoAgeism and DEI intersect in complex ways, impacting individuals of all ages and backgrounds, including most older adults who avail themselves of CBO services and complicating their experience with healthcare. This webinar will explore actionable strategies to dismantle ageist beliefs, while fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Discover how these efforts strengthen cross-sector collaboration among AAAs, CBOs and the healthcare sector, ultimately aligning physical and social health.

Participants in this webinar will:

  • Explore how biases based on age intersect with other dimensions of diversity and contribute to inequities (e.g., compounded bias due to age and race, stereotyping, healthcare disparities—marginalized older adults, representation and visibility, economic inequities, access to resources, policy, and advocacy).
  • Explore harmful stereotypes associated with different age groups and understand how they intersect with gender and other identities, magnifying discriminations.
  • Learn how organizations (including AAAs and CBOs) can create inclusive workplaces and practices that recognize and value the contributions of employees of all ages, promoting collaboration and innovation across generations and across sectors.

Presenter:

Janine Vanderburg is the CEO of Encore Roadmap, speaking, writing and consulting with businesses and brands on how to end ageism, and how to leverage the benefits of older workers and intergenerational teams for organizational success. In 2018, she founded Changing the Narrative, a national campaign to end ageism, through which she has trained thousands of people in ageism, reframing aging and related workplace issues. She created its Age-friendly Workplace Initiative, which makes the business case for older workers and intergenerational teams and including age as part of DEI; she won a Metro Vision Award from Denver Regional Council of Governments for this effort. For the past three years, Janine chaired the Encore Network, a global coalition of leaders who champion the civic, social and economic contributions of people ages 50 and older.
